When I was a young girl, I had a common childhood disease call Chicken Pox. You get these itchy bumps all over you, they eventually scab over and then you're all better. If you pick the scabs off, you sometimes get a scar and I have a couple of those to prove it.
Tuesday morning I woke up with a weird rash on my back that was prickly-itchy and then there were a few of the same "bumps" under my right arm but these hurt! Being a nurse, I had a bit of a suspicion that this was a condition called shingles. It's the same virus and anyone who has ever had chicken pox can get shingles. I went to work that morning, but working with cancer patients who are mostly immunocompromised, I didn't think it was a good idea just to ignore the condition. I asked Kim, one of the nurse practitioners to take a look and sure enough...it was a case of shingles. I was told to leave work so I wouldn't infect any of the patients. I stopped by my Doctors office and his nurse practioner confirmed Kim's diagnosis and got me on Zovirax, an anti-viral med that helps shorten the outbreak and hopefully prevent post-herpatic neuralgia....or nerve pain that the virus attacks.
Thankfully, I got started on the med within 72hrs of the outbreak and so far the pain has been minimal and even the itching isn't too bad.
Why is it that when something unexpected happens to us, we tend to ask God "why me"?
I did. I just couldn't understand this glitch in my weekly schedule, this bump in the road of my plans. Did God know something I didn't? Did I need to slow down, take a break from work, rest and relax? In Jeremiah, God tells us that he "knows the plans" he has for us. So not working the rest of the week is a chance for me to abide in the Lord and his rest....to spend a little extra time in his word....to pray that prayer I promised I'd lift up for a special need.
So thanks be to God for this little interruption in my daily life. And thanks to my friends who are praying for my swift healing.
