Apple Tree

We have this old apple tree in our back yard. Last year the apples were the size of ping pong balls and very knobby....not worth doing anything with. I had suggested to Mike that we cut it down and plant some new fruit trees. We never go around to the cutting down or even the pruning so this year, when we saw all these little apples coming on the tree, we were surprised. We were even more surprised when they grew to the size of a softball! I picked a few one day and thought I'd make a dish of applesauce with them. They were delicious. I picked some more and made apple dumplings. Yummo! So now it's the picking and preserving part that's going on. I bought this handy peeler, corer, slicer gadget at TJ Maxx and it makes processing the apples a breeze. So since today was a rainy, dreary day, it was a good day for making a big pot of applesauce to freeze and that's exactly what I did. I've also sliced some for the freezer to make a pie or what have you. It'll taste great in the winter, eh?
There are still numerous apples in the tree waiting for their chance to be part of our diet and I look forward to using all that I can. That's being sustainable...I think!

Oooh, I have fruit tree envy.

I asked for a pear tree for Mother's Day a few years ago. I got one. And ornamental pear tree. :( It's the prettiest thing, but teases me with it's cute little (teeny, tiny, never edible) fruits.
