I started my dig with the plan to "thin out" my Iris bed which also had a lot of daylillies too. I completely emptied the bed to find a LOT of bulbs. I replanted the irises in the same bed I started in, attempting to eliminate the daylillies from this bed. No luck...there were too many tubers in the ground to fully remove the lillies. Therefore.....I moved onto the next project. If you'll look at the photo with all the dead grass that totally fronts our property, you'll see an ongoing project...kill the weeds, plant ground cover or something that'll take over so Mike won't have to weed eat. Well we have a small plot on the right side of our mailbox which was started last year. As I weede that plot, I also planted some of the irises that I thinned out (the rest go to Marsha!) Then I studied the left side of the mailbox...hmmmm perfect for day lillies. They take over, get thick and pretty and you don't have to weed eat. But first I had to remove the dead grass. I found that if you raked it, the tops easily came loose. Almost like hay. But then I had to get a had "fork" and a digger to get the roots up and out. THEN, I took a bulb digger and made holes in my now cleared area to plant the daylillies. I'm very pleased with the results and I'm hoping Mike will be too. Wish I had someone who could have taken a photo of me when I finished. I was indeed a dirty mess! But I got done before the mid afternoon sun hit the spot and am now basking in my cool air conditioned home. So if you are asking what I do now that I am not working? Well.....there you go! This time next week (God willing) I'll be in San Antonio visiting Walt and Annie:)
